Cycling through history: Telling the story of Franklin County Kansas
Aug 15, 2022
Ottawa Bike and Trail has partnered with the Franklin County Historical Society to enhance our cycling routes on the Flint Hills Trail, Prairie Spirit Trail, and gravel roads and low-traffic roads around Franklin County Kansas.
We believe that cycling is one of the best ways to explore, understand, and appreciate the colorful history of this part of Kansas. Our detailed maps will tell the story of Franklin County and the surrounding areas by highlighting the historic points of interest. We think this will bring to life the the indigenous people of Kansas, the early settlers, the railroads, and the people and places that have make Franklin County what it is today.
We're introducing our first route in conjunction with Moonrise Bike Ride 2022. We've added several points of interest to the Moonrise Bike Ride Route on the Flint Hills Trail State Park. Most of these points of interest are easily accessible from the Flint Hills Trail. You'll learn about the "Marsh of Swans", the Burial Grounds of the Chippewa, 110-Mile Creek, and the Whippoorwill Disaster at Pomona Lake.
When you're riding the trail don't be in a rush. Stop and take a minute to absorb the history of this place. We know it'll make your ride just that much more memorable.
Special thanks to Dianna Staresinic-Deane, the Director of the Franklin County Historical Society for helping tell the story.
